Yuzuru Hanyu
Yuzuru Hanyu became the first men's singles skater in 66 years to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals, taking titles at the 2014 Sochi and 2018 Pyeongchang Games, a feat that hadn't been accomplished by a male skater since Dick Button in the early 1950s. Hanyu's 2018 gold came just weeks after a serious ankle ligament injury that had kept him off the ice for months leading into the Games, and he competed in Pyeongchang with limited practice time, making the repeat title one of the more improbable comebacks in recent Winter Olympics history. He was the first skater in history to land a quadruple loop in competition, doing so at the 2016 Autumn Classic, and his combination of technical jump difficulty with an unusually artistic, expressive skating style made him one of the sport's most complete competitors across both the technical and presentation components judges score. Hanyu turned professional in 2022 after narrowly missing a third consecutive Olympic medal in Beijing, and his massive popularity in Japan — regularly drawing sold-out arenas for exhibition skating well after his competitive retirement — reflects a level of mainstream crossover fame that few figure skaters, male or female, have ever achieved.
VS
Evgeni Plushenko
Evgeni Plushenko won four Olympic medals across four consecutive Winter Games, from 2002 to 2014 — gold in 2006 and 2014 (team event), plus two silvers — a level of sustained excellence across a 12-year Olympic career that few men's singles skaters have come close to matching. He was the first skater to land a quadruple-triple jump combination in competition and remained one of the sport's most technically dominant jumpers across more than a decade, at a time when quadruple jumps were still rare enough in men's skating that most competitors avoided attempting them in major competition. Plushenko's 2014 Sochi Games appearance, at 31 and after multiple back surgeries that had at times threatened his career entirely, came in the team event on home soil, where his performance helped anchor Russia's gold medal — before he withdrew from the individual competition due to a back injury that made continuing physically impossible. His combination of technical jump difficulty and a commanding, confident competitive presence made him the dominant figure in men's figure skating through the 2000s, and his four Olympic medals across four different Games place him among the most durable elite competitors the sport has ever produced.
