Zaha Hadid
Zaha Hadid, born in Baghdad, Iraq, became internationally recognized for her bold, fluid, futuristic architectural designs, and in 2004 she became the first woman ever awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, architecture's most prestigious honor, in the award's then 26-year history. Hadid's design work was frequently characterized by dramatic curved forms and a rejection of traditional sharp right angles, an approach that became so distinctive it was often described in architectural criticism as "starchitecture" defined by pure visual spectacle and structural ambition. Hadid's notable completed projects include the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan, and the London Aquatics Centre built for the 2012 Olympics, and her architectural firm continued major global projects after her unexpected death in 2016 at age 65. Zaha Hadid's combination of her landmark status as the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize and her boldly futuristic curved architectural style has made her one of the most influential architects in contemporary history.
VS
I.M. Pei
I.M. Pei was born in Guangzhou, China in 1917 and emigrated to the United States in 1935 to study architecture, eventually becoming one of the most celebrated modernist architects of the 20th century, known for combining geometric precision with monumental scale. Pei's most globally famous work, the glass pyramid entrance to the Louvre Museum in Paris, completed in 1989, was initially highly controversial among French critics and the public for its stark modern design juxtaposed against the historic palace, before eventually becoming one of the most iconic architectural landmarks in the world. Pei received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, and his broader portfolio includes the National Gallery of Art's East Building in Washington, D.C. and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, reflecting a career spanning major institutional and civic architecture across multiple continents. I.M. Pei's combination of his initially controversial but ultimately beloved Louvre Pyramid design and his decades-long career spanning major institutional architecture worldwide has made him one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.
