Zapier
Zapier launched in 2011, built around a no-code automation platform that lets users connect different business apps together — automatically saving email attachments to cloud storage, or adding new customer form submissions directly to a spreadsheet — without requiring any custom programming. The company has added generative AI directly into that existing automation platform through "AI by Zapier," letting users build automation workflows that include AI-generated steps, like automatically drafting a personalized reply to a customer inquiry before routing it to a human for final review and sending. Zapier's core value for small businesses has always been connecting tools that don't natively talk to each other — a small business's email platform, invoicing software, and social media scheduler, for instance — and its AI features extend that same connective role into tasks that previously required manual judgment rather than a straightforward if-this-then-that flow. Zapier's combination of over a decade of established no-code automation credibility and its newer AI-powered workflow steps has made it one of the most practically useful AI tools for small businesses trying to automate the routine judgment calls sitting between their existing disconnected software tools.
VS
Intercom Fin
Intercom, founded in 2011, built its original business around live chat and customer messaging software for websites and apps, before launching Fin in 2023 as a dedicated AI customer-support agent built directly on top of that existing messaging infrastructure. Fin is designed to autonomously answer customer support questions using a business's own help-center articles and documentation as its knowledge source, escalating to a human support agent only when it can't confidently resolve an issue itself, rather than requiring a human to review every single interaction. Intercom has publicly reported meaningful resolution-rate statistics for Fin across its customer base, positioning it directly as a way for small businesses to offer round-the-clock customer support coverage without staffing an equivalent round-the-clock human support team, a genuine cost consideration for smaller operations. Intercom Fin's combination of building directly on an already established customer-messaging platform and its autonomous, escalate-only-when-needed design has made it one of the more practically adopted AI tools for small businesses specifically needing to extend customer support coverage beyond what their existing staff size can otherwise provide.
