And Then There Were None
"And Then There Were None," published by Agatha Christie in 1939, follows ten strangers lured to an isolated island who are murdered one by one according to the pattern of a sinister nursery rhyme, and it remains the best-selling mystery novel of all time, with estimated sales exceeding 100 million copies. Christie's structural innovation of isolating a closed group of suspects with no possibility of outside involvement, forcing readers and characters alike to conclude the killer must be among the dwindling survivors, became one of the most influential and widely imitated devices in the entire mystery genre. The novel's original title and some subsequent editions used period-accurate but now-recognized-as-offensive language reflecting the source nursery rhyme, and the book's title and packaging have been revised over the decades in various markets to address this directly. And Then There Were None's combination of its record-setting sales as the best-selling mystery novel ever published and its genre-defining closed-circle murder structure has made it one of the most significant crime novels in publishing history.
VS
The Big Sleep
"The Big Sleep," published by Raymond Chandler in 1939, introduced private detective Philip Marlowe in a labyrinthine Los Angeles blackmail and murder case, and it became one of the foundational texts establishing the hardboiled detective fiction genre alongside Dashiell Hammett's earlier work. Chandler's densely atmospheric, morally ambiguous prose style, filled with distinctive similes and a jaded but principled detective navigating a corrupt city, established a voice and sensibility that directly shaped virtually every subsequent hardboiled and noir crime novel written afterward. The novel's plot became famous for its genuine narrative complexity — reportedly, when the 1946 film adaptation's screenwriters asked Chandler who was responsible for one particular murder in his own novel, he admitted he didn't actually know, a frequently repeated anecdote about the novel's structural density. The Big Sleep's combination of introducing the iconic Philip Marlowe character and establishing hardboiled detective fiction's foundational literary voice has made it one of the most influential crime novels ever written.
