Darth Vader
Darth Vader, introduced in 1977's Star Wars, established a visual and sonic template for menacing screen villains that's rarely been matched — his black armored suit, mechanical breathing sound designed by sound engineer Ben Burtt, and James Earl Jones's deep, resonant voice performance combined into one of the most instantly recognizable villain designs in film history. The character's 1980 reveal in The Empire Strikes Back, in which Vader tells protagonist Luke Skywalker "I am your father," is one of the most widely referenced plot twists in cinema history, and the line's frequent misquoting as "Luke, I am your father" has itself become a piece of broader pop-culture trivia. Vader's backstory as fallen Jedi Anakin Skywalker, later expanded across the prequel trilogy released between 1999 and 2005, gave the character a tragic redemption arc uncommon for a screen villain of his stature, ultimately turning against his master to save his son in the original trilogy's climax. The character's combination of a genuinely intimidating physical and vocal presence with a redemptive arc that complicated his purely villainous status has made Vader the character most frequently cited when film critics and audiences discuss the greatest movie villains ever created.
VS
Norman Bates
Norman Bates, portrayed by Anthony Perkins in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho, established the template for the psychologically complex, sympathetically portrayed screen killer, presenting an outwardly awkward, soft-spoken motel owner whose dissociative identity disorder drives him to murder while believing himself innocent. The film's twist revealing that Bates's domineering mother, whom audiences hear and believe to be alive throughout the film, has actually been dead for years — with Bates himself adopting her personality and voice — became one of the most influential plot reveals in horror film history. Bates's shower scene murder of protagonist Marion Crane, achieved through rapid editing and a shrieking string score rather than explicit graphic violence, remains one of the most analyzed and imitated sequences in film history, and its combination of suggestion over explicit gore became a defining technique for psychological horror going forward. The character's influence on the subsequent development of the slasher genre, along with the specific "motel run by a disturbed killer" setup, has been directly referenced and imitated across decades of horror filmmaking, and the real Bates Motel set built for the film remains a preserved attraction on the Universal Studios lot to this day.
