Duke University
Duke University traces its roots to a small 1838 institution before being transformed in 1924 through a massive endowment from tobacco and energy industrialist James Buchanan Duke, who required the school be renamed in honor of his father as a condition of the gift — a founding donation large enough to fund the university's rapid expansion into a national research institution. The university's Gothic-style West Campus, centered on Duke Chapel's 210-foot bell tower, was built almost entirely during the 1920s and '30s using Duke's tobacco fortune, giving the campus an architectural uniformity and grandeur unusual for a university founded so much more recently than its Ivy League peers. Duke's men's basketball program, under longtime coach Mike Krzyzewski, won five national championships and became one of the most recognizable brands in college sports, and the "Cameron Crazies" student section at Cameron Indoor Stadium is frequently cited as one of the most intense home-court atmospheres in all of college athletics. The university's medical center and its Fuqua School of Business have each built strong national reputations, and Duke's combination of elite academics, major-program athletics, and a relatively young institutional history compared to its Ivy League-caliber peers has made it one of the fastest institutional rises in the history of American higher education.
VS
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, chartered in 1789, is the oldest public university in the United States to admit and graduate students, having held classes continuously since 1795, a claim to seniority among American public universities that no other institution can match. UNC's basketball program, one of the most successful in NCAA history with multiple national championships under coaches Dean Smith and Roy Williams, has built a rivalry with Duke, located just eight miles away, that's widely regarded as one of the most intense in all of American sports. The university's Kenan-Flagler Business School and its journalism and public health programs each rank among the best in the country at any public university, and UNC's research funding and faculty recruiting have kept it competitive with far more expensive private research universities despite its public in-state tuition structure. UNC's Chapel Hill campus, centered on a historic quad anchored by the Old Well, a small domed structure that's become the university's most recognizable symbol, gives the school a strong sense of place that's remained a fixture of student life and campus tradition across more than two centuries of continuous operation.
