Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy launched in 1987, created by Hironobu Sakaguchi for developer Square, reportedly named partly because the game was intended as the company's last-ditch project before an anticipated bankruptcy, a fate the game's surprise commercial success ultimately helped the company avoid entirely. The franchise became known for its anthology structure, with each mainline numbered entry typically featuring an entirely new self-contained story, world, and cast of characters rather than direct narrative continuity, letting Square (later Square Enix) continuously reinvent the series' setting and mechanics with each new installment. Final Fantasy VII, released in 1997, is widely credited as one of the most influential and commercially significant role-playing games ever made, helping establish Japanese role-playing games as a major commercial genre for Western audiences during the PlayStation era. Final Fantasy's combination of its unusual anthology structure reinventing itself with each entry and Final Fantasy VII's historically significant role popularizing Japanese RPGs in the West has made it one of the most influential video game franchises in the industry's history.
VS
Call of Duty
Call of Duty launched in 2003 as a World War II first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward, before the franchise's pivotal shift to a modern military setting with 2007's "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" reshaped both the series and the broader first-person shooter genre's commercial direction. The franchise's annual release cycle, with a new mainline entry launching essentially every year for two decades, became a widely studied business model in the games industry, sustained by a rotating group of development studios working in parallel to maintain the yearly cadence. Call of Duty's multiplayer and later battle royale modes became a massive standalone cultural and commercial phenomenon, and the franchise has consistently ranked among the best-selling video game series of each year it releases a new entry, reflecting an unusually durable annual commercial demand. Call of Duty's combination of its industry-reshaping shift to modern military shooters and its historically significant sustained annual release business model has made it one of the most commercially dominant video game franchises in the industry.
