Giorgio Armani
Giorgio Armani founded his eponymous fashion house in Milan in 1975 after an earlier career designing menswear for other Italian labels, and he became particularly known for softening the traditionally rigid, structured tailoring of men's suits into a more relaxed, fluid silhouette that reshaped modern menswear. Armani's designs became closely associated with Hollywood after dressing Richard Gere in the 1980 film "American Gigolo," a partnership that helped establish the now-common practice of major designers dressing film stars both on screen and for red carpet events, significantly shaping how fashion and celebrity culture intertwined afterward. The Armani brand expanded into a global luxury empire spanning multiple product lines and price points, from the flagship Giorgio Armani label to the more accessible Emporio Armani and Armani Exchange lines, demonstrating a tiered brand-extension strategy widely emulated by other luxury fashion houses. Giorgio Armani's combination of his reshaping of modern menswear tailoring and his foundational role connecting fashion design directly to Hollywood celebrity culture has made him one of the most influential fashion designers in modern history.
VS
Vera Wang
Vera Wang worked as a figure skater and later a Vogue editor for over fifteen years before transitioning into fashion design at age 40, launching her own bridal design house in 1990 after reportedly struggling to find a wedding dress she liked for her own wedding. Wang's bridal designs became closely associated with celebrity weddings, and her reputation for elegant, modern wedding gown design fundamentally reshaped the American bridal fashion industry, moving it away from more traditional, conservative styles toward more architecturally sophisticated designs. Wang's later expansion beyond bridal wear into ready-to-wear fashion, fragrance, and home goods demonstrated a successful brand extension from a highly specialized niche (bridal fashion) into a broader lifestyle brand, a transition that proved more difficult for many other designers who began in specialized fashion categories. Vera Wang's combination of her unusual late-career transition into fashion design and her transformative influence on modern American bridal fashion has made her one of the most significant fashion designers of her generation.
