Grand Theft Auto
Grand Theft Auto began in 1997 as a top-down crime action game from Scottish developer DMA Design, before the franchise's 2001 shift to a fully 3D open world with "Grand Theft Auto III" is widely credited with establishing the modern open-world action game genre as a commercially viable mainstream format. The franchise, developed by Rockstar Games since its rebranding, became known for its satirical, often controversial depiction of American culture and crime, and individual entries have repeatedly generated significant public controversy over violent content even as they became some of the best-selling entertainment products in any medium. Grand Theft Auto V, released in 2013, became one of the best-selling entertainment products of all time across any medium, including film and music, and its persistent online multiplayer mode sustained an enormous ongoing player base for well over a decade after the base game's release. Grand Theft Auto's combination of establishing the modern open-world action genre and its record-setting commercial performance across the franchise's history has made it one of the most commercially significant video game franchises ever created.
VS
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy launched in 1987, created by Hironobu Sakaguchi for developer Square, reportedly named partly because the game was intended as the company's last-ditch project before an anticipated bankruptcy, a fate the game's surprise commercial success ultimately helped the company avoid entirely. The franchise became known for its anthology structure, with each mainline numbered entry typically featuring an entirely new self-contained story, world, and cast of characters rather than direct narrative continuity, letting Square (later Square Enix) continuously reinvent the series' setting and mechanics with each new installment. Final Fantasy VII, released in 1997, is widely credited as one of the most influential and commercially significant role-playing games ever made, helping establish Japanese role-playing games as a major commercial genre for Western audiences during the PlayStation era. Final Fantasy's combination of its unusual anthology structure reinventing itself with each entry and Final Fantasy VII's historically significant role popularizing Japanese RPGs in the West has made it one of the most influential video game franchises in the industry's history.
