Jeep Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler traces its lineage directly back to the original Willys MB, the World War II military Jeep first produced in 1941, and across every generation since, Jeep has deliberately preserved the same fundamental formula — solid front and rear axles, a boxy body, and a removable roof and doors — even as nearly every other SUV on the market shifted to car-based unibody construction for a smoother ride. That commitment to solid-axle simplicity gives the Wrangler exceptional wheel articulation over uneven terrain, a genuine advantage on technical rock-crawling trails where independent suspension setups can struggle to keep all four tires in contact with the ground simultaneously. The Rubicon trim, named after California's famously difficult Rubicon Trail, adds locking front and rear differentials, a stronger Dana 44 axle, and an ultra-low crawl ratio specifically engineered for the kind of extreme, low-speed rock crawling the trail itself is known for testing vehicles against. Built at Stellantis's Toledo Complex in Ohio, the same historic Jeep plant that's produced the nameplate for decades, the Wrangler's unbroken commitment to solid axles and removable-everything open-air design has made it the vehicle most enthusiasts point to first when asked to name the most capable stock off-roader still sold new.
VS
Ford Bronco
The original Ford Bronco launched in 1966 as Ford's answer to the Jeep CJ and International Harvester Scout, building a loyal off-road following across five generations before Ford discontinued it in 1996 in favor of the larger, more truck-like Expedition. Ford revived the Bronco for the 2021 model year on a body-on-frame platform shared with the Ranger pickup, built specifically to compete head-on with the Jeep Wrangler — removable doors, a fold-down windshield on some trims, and a modular roof system all directly mirror the Wrangler's own open-air off-road formula. The Bronco's available "Sasquatch Package" adds 35-inch off-road tires, a locking front and rear differential, and a beadlock-capable wheel design, giving buyers a factory-built alternative to the aftermarket lift-and-tire upgrades off-road enthusiasts have traditionally had to source separately for other stock SUVs. Built at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, the revived Bronco's rapid rise as a genuine direct rival to the Wrangler — something no other manufacturer had managed for decades — reflects both Ford's own off-road engineering investment and a broader surge in consumer demand for factory-capable off-roaders through the 2020s.
