Mandeville, LA
Mandeville sits on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, connected to New Orleans on the lake's southern shore by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, which at nearly 24 miles is recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest bridge over a continuous body of water anywhere on Earth. That causeway connection has made Mandeville and the broader north shore area an increasingly popular alternative for New Orleans commuters seeking a quieter, more suburban lakefront community while still maintaining a manageable drive into the city for work, a pattern that's accelerated substantially since Hurricane Katrina. The city's lakefront promenade along Lake Pontchartrain and the Tammany Trace, a paved rail-trail built on a former railroad corridor running through several north shore communities, have given Mandeville an extensive network of walking and biking paths distinct from the more car-dependent development found in parts of the broader New Orleans suburban area. Mandeville's combination of its connection via the world's longest over-water bridge, a growing role as a north shore alternative for New Orleans commuters, and extensive lakefront and rail-trail recreation has made it one of the more distinctively positioned and increasingly popular suburbs anywhere in the greater New Orleans metropolitan area.
VS
Covington, LA
Covington sits on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain a few miles from Mandeville, and its historic downtown, built around a well-preserved grid of 19th-century buildings, has developed a genuine arts-town identity, with a concentration of galleries, working artist studios, and the St. Tammany Art Association drawing visitors specifically for its creative community. The city has become a haven for writers and musicians over the decades, and Covington's relatively small scale and historic character have made it a popular alternative for New Orleans-area residents seeking a quieter, more walkable small-town setting without leaving the broader metro region entirely. The Tammany Trace rail-trail, the same paved path running through Mandeville, extends through Covington as well, giving the city direct biking and walking access to neighboring north shore communities along a former railroad corridor. Covington's combination of a well-preserved historic downtown, a genuine concentration of working artists and writers, and direct rail-trail connections to neighboring communities has made it one of the more culturally distinctive small towns anywhere on Lake Pontchartrain's north shore.
