Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines was founded in 1967 by Herb Kelleher and Rollin King, reportedly conceived on a cocktail napkin sketch outlining a simple triangular route connecting Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, and the airline began flights in 1971 built around a genuinely different low-cost business model. Southwest pioneered the point-to-point, single-aircraft-type low-cost carrier model in the United States, flying only Boeing 737 aircraft to simplify maintenance and training, and famously not assigning specific seats for decades, letting passengers choose seats upon boarding instead. Southwest built a distinctive company culture under Kelleher's leadership, emphasizing employee satisfaction and humor in customer service, and the airline maintained an unusually long streak of profitability across most of its operating history compared to numerous competitors that went through bankruptcy. Southwest Airlines's combination of its famous cocktail-napkin origin story and its pioneering low-cost, single-aircraft-type business model has made it one of the most influential and studied airlines in aviation business history.

American Airlines
American Airlines was formed in 1930 through the consolidation of numerous small regional carriers known as American Airways, and it grew over the following decades into one of the largest airlines in the world, historically headquartered in New York before later relocating to Texas. American merged with US Airways in 2013 while emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a deal that created, at the time, the largest airline in the world by passenger traffic, combining two major legacy carrier networks under one brand. American Airlines has maintained one of the largest domestic hub networks of any U.S. carrier, with major hubs including Dallas-Fort Worth, Charlotte, and Chicago O'Hare, giving it an especially extensive route network across the American South and Midwest. American Airlines's combination of its 1930 origins consolidating early regional carriers and its landmark 2013 merger with US Airways has made it one of the most historically significant airlines in the United States.
