Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines was founded in 1967 by Herb Kelleher and Rollin King, reportedly conceived on a cocktail napkin sketch outlining a simple triangular route connecting Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, and the airline began flights in 1971 built around a genuinely different low-cost business model. Southwest pioneered the point-to-point, single-aircraft-type low-cost carrier model in the United States, flying only Boeing 737 aircraft to simplify maintenance and training, and famously not assigning specific seats for decades, letting passengers choose seats upon boarding instead. Southwest built a distinctive company culture under Kelleher's leadership, emphasizing employee satisfaction and humor in customer service, and the airline maintained an unusually long streak of profitability across most of its operating history compared to numerous competitors that went through bankruptcy. Southwest Airlines's combination of its famous cocktail-napkin origin story and its pioneering low-cost, single-aircraft-type business model has made it one of the most influential and studied airlines in aviation business history.

JetBlue
JetBlue was founded in 1998 by David Neeleman and began flying in 2000, launching with a specific focus on offering low fares alongside amenities uncommon among discount carriers at the time, including free live satellite television at every seat and leather seating in coach class. The airline built its primary hub at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, positioning itself to directly compete against major legacy carriers on lucrative East Coast and transcontinental routes rather than avoiding major hub cities like many other low-cost carriers of that era. JetBlue drew significant industry attention in 2007 after a major winter storm operational failure stranded passengers on the tarmac for hours, prompting the airline to introduce one of the industry's first formal Customer Bill of Rights, later influencing broader industry and regulatory standards for passenger treatment during delays. JetBlue's combination of its unusually amenity-rich low-cost model and its pioneering post-2007 Customer Bill of Rights has made it one of the most influential airlines in shaping modern U.S. passenger service standards.
