Tootsie Roll
Tootsie Roll, introduced by Leo Hirschfield in New York in 1896 and named after his daughter's nickname, is one of the oldest continuously produced candies in American history, and its individually wrapped, penny-candy-era format made it especially well suited to mass Halloween distribution decades before more modern candy bars existed. The company's Chicago-based production, scaled up significantly through the 20th century, helped Tootsie Roll Industries become one of the largest candy manufacturers in the country, producing tens of millions of individual Tootsie Rolls daily during peak Halloween production periods each fall. Its notably low individual unit cost relative to chocolate-based candies made it a historically popular choice for households distributing large quantities of trick-or-treat candy on a budget, giving it an enduring practical role in Halloween distribution beyond its own direct popularity rankings. Its combination of its status as one of the oldest candies still in continuous American production and its practical affordability for mass Halloween distribution has made the Tootsie Roll one of the most historically significant candies associated with the holiday.
VS
Snickers
Snickers, introduced by Mars, Incorporated in 1930 and named after a favorite horse owned by the Mars family, became one of the best-selling candy bars in the world and a perennial top performer in Halloween candy popularity rankings for decades. Its combination of nougat, caramel, peanuts, and milk chocolate gave it a more substantial, meal-adjacent quality relative to simpler single-ingredient candies, a positioning Mars leaned into decades later with its long-running "You're not you when you're hungry" advertising campaign. The bar's fun-size format, specifically produced and marketed for Halloween distribution, became one of the most commonly cited "good candy house" treats among trick-or-treaters, reflecting the brand's deliberate seasonal packaging strategy built around the holiday specifically. Its combination of its sustained global sales dominance and its status as a consistently top-ranked Halloween treat has made Snickers one of the most commercially significant candy bars associated with the holiday.
